Why? Because it’s a term that most people will have heard of outside the app… and the meaning is the same!

Dupe means / is short for Duplicate.

On TikTok, the term tends to refer specifically to fashion items and tangible, physical products – whereby a designer or high end good has been duplicated by another brand or user.

For example, brands like Shein often use the term ‘dupe’ in their marketing because many of their products are inspired by or based on more expensive versions and alternatives. Similarly, fashion profiles and influencers will often share their favourite ‘dupes’ from the high street and online marketplace, to replace otherwise high priced items in their images.
